Tips for Healthier, Thicker, and More Gorgeous Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USC chapter.

1. Limit your use of heat products. Only blow dry, curl, or straighten your hair once every two weeks! It will make your hair silkier and keep the ends healthier longer.

2. Only use shampoo on the top of your scalp…NOT on the ends. Allow the shampoo to clean your ends only when you rinse your head. Applying shampoo to the ends of your hair will only dry the ends out more and contribute to breakage.

3. Do NOT use a brush when your hair is wet! Using a brush on wet hair will tear hairs from your scalp, causing breakage. Gently COMB wet hair to make sure you are not ripping out pieces. Being gentle with your hair is key.

4) Sleep with your hair in a braid. When you toss and turn in night, you are tugging and pulling at your hair. This movement causes knots and severe bed head. If you braid your hair, the pieces are more likely to stay in place.

5) Get a haircut at least once every two months. Even if you just get a small trim, this will make all the difference in the long run. Your ends will be healthier, and your hair will grow faster.

6) Use baby powder to avoid oily hair! If you wash your hair in the morning, and don’t want to wash it the next day, put some baby powder on the roots before bed so that it won’t be oily when you wake up. The powder soaks up the oil so that the next day your hair still looks fresh. The first time I heard this I thought it was weird too! Trust me… it works!

I hope you take these tips to heart and feel you hair get healthier within weeks!
