“Heard it in a Past Life” is filled with post-breakup anthems and coming of age songs. These are the type of songs you want get lost to while driving. Songs like “Alaska,” “Fallingwater,” and “Light On” include moving lyrics that feel relatable as well as cathartic. “Cut my hair so I can rock back and forth without thinking of you,” she sings on the song “Alaska,” affirming the empowering act of changing your hair after a breakup. It’s no wonder Pharrell could not keep composure when she played him this song. “Say It” is a true R&B folk bop, with gorgeous synths and a catchy chorus.
There are so many beautiful songs on this album, all with messages of love, growing up and finding ones self.
