February 1st marks the start of Black History Month. This month is an annual celebration of all the accomplishments and achievements by African Americans. University of South Florida calls this month Black Heritage Month. The mission of Black Heritage Month is to educate both the campus and others in the Tampa Bay area about the significance of the black history and culture.

Black Heritage Month’s theme this year is “Sankofa: Incorporating our Past into the Present to Make Progress for the Future.” According to USF, this theme is revolved around the idea that in order to move forward successfully, one must go back to what the past has to teach one’s self. There will be more information at the Sankofa Celebration on February 28th at 5 p.m.

We need to remember that just because February represents Black History Month, does not mean this should be the only month to be celebrate. We should celebrate everyone’s past and present accomplishments all throughout the year. I hope everyone checks out some of the events happening around campus this month.
