As a college student, there is nothing we like more than getting a taste of home while still at school. One of the things that I personally miss most about the holidays is all of the decorations that are up around my town and my house. Normally, decorating for the holidays is a family tradition that gets everyone in the spirit, but being in college, many miss out on this tradition. Here are some fun and easy ways to make your experience at school similar to that at home, and especially on a college budget.
DIY Snowflakes
The elementary school activity that requires nothing more than white computer paper and scissors:
1. Fold a piece of computer paper in half and cut out your own unique design, without cutting the center.
2. Unfold the paper.
3. Tape it anywhere in your apartment or dorm.
4. Add some glitter.
DIY Ornaments
Here are two great options for some holiday ornaments that you can make right at home.
First, get a package of candy canes and tie pipe cleaners around the top. Simple as that you have a Christmas tree ornament!
Second, pine cone ornaments:
1. Get a pine cone.
2. Dip in Elmer’s Glue.
3. Dip in glitter.
4. Glue a ribbon to the top.
5. Hang from a Christmas tree.
DIY Candle Holders
The holidays are a great time to bring out some scented candles you’ve had laying around.
1. Purchase dollar store wine glasses (different sizes if possible).
2. Hot glue a holiday color ribbon around the top.
3. Place a tea-light candle inside each glass.
4. Set on a table and light for Christmas dinner.
DIY Vases
Have any empty wine bottles lying around? Especially if they are different sizes, these can easily be turned into eye catching holiday vases or even inexpensive gifts for a loved one or friend.
1. Peel off the labels on empty wine bottles.
2. Spray paint the bottles with white paint.
3. Let dry.
4. Once dry, use a paintbrush and coat the bottles with Elmer’s glue.
5. Dip each bottle in silver glitter to coat the glue.
6. Let dry.
7. Place anywhere in your home with flowers inside and enjoy this beautiful decoration.
