Feeling Good In Your Skin: Summer Makeup Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

This everyday sweltering heat is a constant reminder that winter has officially ended! With the change in seasons comes the inevitable change in fashion trends. Fashion enthusiasts are not only revamping their closets, but also adding this summer’s makeup essentials to their makeup kits. After all, what’s a trendy outfit if the look isn’t complete?

Here are a few basic guidelines for a good skincare regimen to ensure you – first and foremost – feel good in your bare skin.

1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! This is a basic step to add to your skincare routine, but it makes a world of difference. The trick to exfoliation is finding the right balance. Play around with different products once in a while to see what suits you best! The best DIY exfoliant is the good ol’ olive oil and sugar scrub. It smells great and does wonders for the skin. Mix a drop of your most gentle face wash with this duo and your skin will glow like never before! To start out, gentle exfoliation once or twice per week is ideal to replenish skin cells.

2. Cleansing. Nobody, no matter how oily your skin is, should cleanse more than two times per day. The skin should be cleansed once in the morning and once before bed. The most common misconception about cleansing is that the harsher the product the better it will be to get rid of impurities and acne. Wrong. Gentle cleansers such as Cetaphil and First Aid Beauty are soothing cleansers that leave the skin feeling refreshed. If you are worried about removing makeup, visit your kitchen, grab some olive oil and use a cotton pad to prep your skin pre-cleansing. If your skin care routine already includes an acne treatment, there is absolutely no need to get a cleanser that has any medicinal treatment. Acne treatment overkill will cause your skin to suffer!

3. Moisturize. Natural oils are great. Almond oil, grapeseed oil, olive oil and coconut oil are all excellent moisturizers. Just remember, a little goes a long way. Some good store-bought options are Cetaphil, Aveeno and Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation. Apply moisturizer when the skin is slightly damp for optimum penetration. Try to find a product that contains sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to prevent sun damage.

4. Finally, the fun part. Makeup! The key to looking great with makeup is to not look at the application process as a task. Play around. Get creative. Aim to enhance rather than cover up. From daring lip colors to sun-kissed bare faces, this summer’s trending makeup looks will pull fashionistas in completely opposite directions. Here are a few makeup looks to help you pick a side.

Don’t be overwhelmed! When you find those products that become your best friends and turn that routine into a habit, it won’t seem so intimidating. We’ve provided the blueprint. Now go crazy and have fun trying these looks!
