I’m addicted to Tumblr. And there is a good chance that you are, too! Last month alone 199.1 million people visited the microblogging site and, in 2012, about 55 percent of users were female.

Over the past few years I’ve had a ton of fun growing my blog’s popularity. One might even say that my fairytale blog, with over 10,500 followers, is “Tumblr famous.”

Many avid Tumblr users seek the highly coveted title “Tumblr famous.” There is no exact number of followers that qualifies as Tumblr famous. Some say over 1,000 followers grants you the title, while others say over 10,000.

Getting tons of followers on Tumblr is a fun and challenging way to gain internet notoriety. I hope to spread the joy gained from watching your follower count grow, so here are my 5 best tips for gaining hordes of followers and becoming Tumblr famous.

1.       Uniformity

People love knowing what they are getting themselves into. Therefore, everything about your blog should be tailored to your theme of choice. Your theme could be absolutely anything you want: cars, boho, travel, cities or grunge, just to name a few. But once you choose a theme for your blog, make sure everything, from your URL to your content, is consistent with that theme.

2.       Memorable

Your blog’s name and URL should be consistent with your theme and should be easy to remember. URL’s with lots of random dashes and numbers are hard to remember. People should be able to easily remember your URL so that they can hop back onto your site in the future.

3.       Relevance

Prepare yourself because this is the single most important piece of advice I can give you: every single thing you post should be relevant. People love consistency. If your blog theme is cars, people will follow your blog because they are interested in cars. They don’t want to see random posts about Doctor Who or One Direction or inspirational quotes. Diligently sticking to your theme will surely increase your number of followers over time.

4.       Tagging

Always, always, always add tags to your content. You want your content to show up when people use the nifty little search box at the top of the screen. Tons of people find new people to follow by using the search tool. Tumblr’s search function works off content tags, so it is important to add tags to your posts, especially your original posts. It is also important to note that you should only use tags relevant to your post. Don’t use a “cute” tag on a photo of a demon or an “animal” tag on a picture of a human. This only annoys people.

5.       Personality

No one wants to follow people with crummy personalities. You should answer your inbox with kindness and positivity. Let your personality shine through your asks. Don’t be mean to your followers. Be kind and funny. Be someone worth following.

On a different, but related, note, I highly suggest keeping answers to personal asks private. This has to do with tip number 3. People followed your blog to see cars, not to see you rant about school or to tell the world that your favorite food is ice cream.

Hey there! My name is Samantha Stern and I'm a graduating senior of mass communication with a concentration on magazine journalism at the University of South Florida. I've been writing for Her Campus USF since January 2013 and this semester I was appointed editor-in-chief of the online publication. Life is a stressful thing and I want to provide a means of escape and self- improvement for young women, as well as for myself, by writing fun, engaging and useful content accessible anytime and anywhere via the internet. My ultimate goal is to empower women in their 20's. Women are hungry for everyday life advice. They crave tips for achieving the ideal in money, intelligence, beauty, fashion, health and lifestyle.
