Make-Up Hacks That Actually Work

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve scrolled through Pinterest and saw some “super easy” diy project or life hack. However, when you actually try them out yourself, they don’t turn out to look nearly as good as promised. Unfortunately this happens to me most of the time, but then there is that small part of the time when things actually worked out! Here five make up tricks from Pinterest that actually worked:

1. Baby Powder and Mascara

I absolutely love thick eyelashes! All of the mascaras I’ve tried that have promised me fuller lashes tend to give me clumps, which I absolutely hate. Then one glorious day I came across the baby powder trick. Put one coat of mascara on, let it dry then put baby powder on your lashes then apply another coat of mascara over it. Your eyelashes will look instantly fuller minus the clumps!

2. Castor Oil

Castor oil is a popular beauty product, and it really helped grow out my eyebrows. My eyebrows are naturally really thick so I get them done every two weeks, but we all know we can’t get our eyebrows done too often before they start to thin out. When my eyebrows do start to thin out, I just put castor oil on them every night for two weeks and they grow back looking full and fierce.

3. Black Soap

Black Soap is great for getting rid of bruises. While slightly more expensive than regular bar soap, but it does help even out skin tones. It is good for sensitive skin, but it can dry it out sometimes. If you experience dry skin, put on lotion afterwards and you should be fine.

4. Wand Trick

Are you tired of paying $20+ for your favorite mascara? Now you don’t have to! Buy cheaper mascara and just reuse the wands that you like. The wand is mainly what we’re paying for when we buy mascara. Just clean your wand the way you clean your make up brushes or dip it in makeup remover and you can reuse it for as long as you feel comfortable.

5. Coffee and Cocoa Face Mask

I’m a sucker for glowing skin, but I also a sucker for cheap products, so I’m not a fan of super expensive masks. This mask recipe that I got from beauty.about.com really does make my skin look and feel great. It will have your skin looking more alive than ever. All you need is four tbsp of coco powder, four tbsp of anytime of coffee beans or instant coffee, eight tbsp of unflavored yogurt, coconut milk, or almond milk, and two tbsp of honey (for dry skin) of lemon juice (of oily skin).
