This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Her birth-given name is Ella Yelich- O’Connor. She is classy, she has a ridiculously empowering voice and she is truly making a name of herself. You may know her as Lorde. Lorde is fearless. Her biggest hit this past year “Royals” was recently won at the Grammy’s. It is hard to claim that you have never heard this song because it is played several times per hour on the radio. Now, whether you love “Royals” or not, I urge you to listen to her other songs because I promise you will appreciate at least one of them.

Lorde usually sings about situations she has been in because it makes her more confident in her music. She refers to herself as a musician and not a singer because every beat of the music is her own.

Lorde is an average high school student who just turned 17, yet has already released three albums. With this being true, her daily life of spending time with her friends and family in New Zealand is completely different than her life of traveling the world. Lorde had never even gotten on a plane before she flew to the United States of America for music-related events. Her innocence is quite admirable. She started writing music when she was 12 years old.  She was noticed at such a young ageand instantly asked to record some demos. I know what you might be thinking- what was I doing at 17 years old? Well, when you have a passion so strong, you are bound to be noticed. She was at a certain place, doing something she loved, at the right time and was noticed. Her raw talent is what is so amazing about her. She is humble and appreciates everything in life, just as any kid would. Take the music out of her and she is an average girl just like the rest of us.

There is just something about her accent and curly hair that makes you relate to her pure lifestyle. She is slightly overwhelmed by all this fame, but keeps her priorities in line. She is a good student and does not engage in any inappropriate behavior that most teens do these days. In a way it is refreshing to whiteness these new artists, like Lorde, approaching a new life with a bright future. Her music is not the same love beats you hear on the daily or hip-hop bass you cannot listen to on full volume. It is beautifully different.

Lorde is fearless, and that is something we all need to absorb from her music. Her lyrics may be random, but they tie together in a way. Simply listen to one song and most likely you will fall in love with her.
