Sabrina Vourvoulias’s ‘Ink’: The Next Book on Your Reading List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

You would not expect to see such relevancy in today’s society from a novel published in 2012. However, Sabrina Vourvoulias’s novel Ink is more applicable to America’s political climate in more ways than one.

The novel focuses on a dystopian version of America where immigrants are forced to be marked with a barcode tattoo that shows their citizenship status. The stories of the minorities in Ink revolve around being mistreated and sometimes killed as a result of the active institutionalized racism, discrimination and prejudice present in American society.

This powerful novel warns against the same hate and fear that is currently placing Hispanic children in cages, tearing them away from their parents.

You are sure to enjoy this fictional story about issues that are present in the country and today’s society. In addition to becoming aware of current social issues, an upside of reading Ink is that you cannot help but fall in love with the characters in the story.
