The idea of spring cleaning is great: get rid of unused items, reorganize, bleach and scrub and wipe down every surface possible, vacuum out your car, etc. Basically, you get to do all the things you’ve been meaning to do, give yourself a fresh start before summer and just clear your head to wrap up the semester well.
Sounds amazing, right?
But when you look around your space, which (if you’re anything like me) has been gathering dust and trash and random items you don’t use anymore amid a busy semester, the task can seem overwhelming.
If you’re looking to dive into a cleaning frenzy, here are three tips to help you get started.
- Make a list

Looking around and seeing everything that needs to be done can make cleaning seem like a never-ending chore. It’s difficult to begin when you don’t know where to begin, so start with this: grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down everything you need to do. It helps you organize your thoughts and give a cohesive structure to your cleaning. Plus, you get the satisfaction of crossing things off your list when you complete them.
- Break down tasks

Instead of trying to make yourself do everything at once, break down the tasks into smaller sections. There’s lots of ways you can do this: you can make a schedule for yourself, and space the cleaning out over multiple days (for example, you could do a day for getting rid of old things, a day for deep cleaning, and a day for reorganizing). Or, you could split up the cleaning on a smaller level: clean for an hour then take a 15-minute break, or take a small break after every task on your list. Alternate cleaning with something you enjoy!
- Make it fun!

I like to get my roommates to spring clean with me, open up all the windows, light candles, and blast music. Cleaning definitely does not have to be boring! Make it fun, and the time will fly by.
