Standing by the Decision to Pursue Your Dream

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

In college, you are going to second guess a lot of your decisions. To name a few, the decision to go out when you have a class at 9am the next morning, the decision to date a boy that you just know will lead to some regrets, or the decision to do your homework “tomorrow.”

One decision that we should never have to doubt is one that I —and countless others pursuing not-so-reliable occupations, think about much more than anything else. The decision to pursue an occupation that you have dreamed about since you were ten is one that could be either good or bad. In some cases, people know that they want to be doctors, lawyers, or accountants since they were in high school. While these professions are fine, it is not always the case that a person wants to be something so practical.

In my case, I have known that I wanted to be a writer since I was in seventh grade. Gradually, this desire to write something important and moving, that people will actually read and enjoy, became something that shaped my whole life.

Here in college, this is how the age-old conversation of what I am doing with my life goes:

Them: “What are you majoring in?”

Me: “English!”

Them: “Oh, so you are going to be a teacher?”

Me: . . .

For many people, it is hard to grasp the fact that some people want to pursue their dreams and do not care about the money that they will make in the future. While many of those in the arts could go into thousands of different other fields and make more money, they are content to do what they love.

Yes, I am majoring in English, and no, I am not going to be an English teacher. I have decided to stand by my dreams and push forth into a world of creative writing, and while I have so much respect for teachers and those who have plans to be educators, I will not settle for teaching a classroom full of kids when I have always dreamed of writing something that reaches the hands of people across the world.

For those of you who are dancers, painters, actors, producers, and everything in between, stand by your decision to follow this path, and never let anyone tell you that you should be doing something more practical.

I am a Junior at USF majoring in English and aspiring to write something that people enjoy reading. My hobbies are watching New Girl and That 70s Show on repeat, eating good food, and sleeping.
Hey! My name is Leticia and I am the Campus Correspondents here at USF. I am graduating in MAY (omg) with a degree in Advertising and PR.
