Swarm: How Far Would You Go For Your Favorite Celebrity?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

We all have a favorite artist right? We would all like to meet them, talk to them, or even hug them one day. But. there are some fans who can get a little too crazy for their favorite artist. Fans who are willing to do anything for their artists can be a bit much. If you want to see a show that’s about a fan who went INSANE for her favorite artist, then Swarm is the show for you. If you are wanting to watch the show, or currently watching the show, SPOILERS AHEAD.

Amazon Prime Video released a new show called, “Swarm,” directed by Donald Glover, is centered around the protagonist, Dre, played by Dominique Fishback, who is an obsessed fan of her favorite singer, Ni’Jah, played by Nirine S. Brown. As she purchases a ticket to see Ni’Jah, she lives with her best friend, Marissa, played by Chloe Bailey, who is an aspiring makeup artist, and realizes that she needs to be her own person. Even though Dre begged her to stay, Marissa decides to move in with her boyfriend, until she finds out that her boyfriend Khalid, played by Damson Idris, cheated on her the entire relationship. Unfortunately, Marissa committed suicide, which leads to the start of Dre’s rampage.

Dre starts to seek revenge after Marissa’s suicide. First, she killed Marissa’s ex boyfriend for not being at the funeral, but it her suicide is not the only reason. As Dre scrolls through Twitter, anyone who doesn’t like Ni’Jah, or who tries to condescend her, she tracks them down and kills them with her showing a tweet that bad mouthed Ni’Jah, and asking, “who is your favorite artist?”

This show does have its share of crazy moments. Two moments in the show that shook me to my core, were when Dre bit Ni’Jah in the face in episode three, and when Dre snuck into one of her concerts, walked on the stage and tried to touch her. At the end of the show, Ni’Jah accepts her, and lets Dre come with her, not knowing Dre was the one who bit her in the face.

This show takes you through a roller coaster of pure insanity and suspense. There are so many references and comparisons to this show. What do you think this show references??? You guessed it. Beyonce’ fans aka, the BeyHive. Here are some references:

  1. The bees. The sound of bees in every episode. What are Beyonce’s fans known as? The BeyHive
  2. When a new song and album gets released, the entire fanbase goes crazy. You remembered what happened when “Break My Soul” was released. We couldn’t have been more excited.
  3. When Ni’Jah announced her tour, Dre activated a brand new credit card to buy tickets. When Beyonce announced her Renaissance tour, some of us maxed out cards to go to her concert.
