Cory and Topanga are the equivalent of the Ross and Rachel or Carrie and Big romances for millennials. We grew as Cory and Topanga grew, and we fell in love as they did. As children, we would run home from our bus stops after school to catch the 3 p.m. showing of “Boy Meets World,” and now our spring schedules will revolve around the airing of “Girl Meets World.”
That’s right, collegiettes™, your favorite couple is coming back — this time as parents. The series picks up a decade after “Boy Meets World” ended. Cory and Topanga are now married with two children, Riley and Elliot. The show is told through the eyes of Riley, much like Boy Meets World is told through Cory’s perspective.
Just like Topanga at 11 years old, Riley has a troubled best friend and a crush on a handsome boy who is very ahead of his time. Much like our beloved Stuart Minkus from “Boy Meets World,” Shamus Farkle is a 12-year-old kid who is a genius, future world ruler who is protective of Riley and her best friend. Cory will be a new history teacher at Riley’s middle school, while Topanga owns the after-school hangout that specializes in pudding!
Remember when Eric took Cory on his first date with Topanga, or when Eric taught Cory and Shawn the rules of high school the summer before freshman year? If not, it’s probably because you remember Eric picking on Cory and teasing him for being younger and more naive. Well, Elliot is the same way with Riley. He will be constantly reminding Riley that his life experiences outweigh hers. We can’t wait to see their relationship mature like Cory and Eric’s did.
The returning cast for “Girl Meets World” is: Ben Savage as Cory Matthews, Danielle Fishel as Topanga Matthews (yes, she is married and so her last name is no longer Lawrence!) and William Daniels as George Feeny. New cast for “Girl Meets World” is: Rowan Blanchard as Riley Matthews, Sabrina Carpenter as Maya Fox, Corey Fogelmanis as Shamus Farkle and Teo Halm as Elliot Matthews. It is unclear at this time if Will Friedle (Eric Matthews) or Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter) will be participating in the “Boy Meets World” spin-off.
“Girl Meets World” does not yet have a specific premiere date, but it will be on tv some time in 2014. The show will air on Disney Channel.
The best fact about this awesome new spin-off show? It all started with a text message from Ben Savage to Danielle Fishel that read: “Hey, what do you think about being my wife again?”
Her reply? “Nothing would make me happier than to call you my husband five days a week.”
That, alone, is reason enough to tune in to “Girl Meets World.”
