TV TUESDAY: New Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Everybody has their favorite type of show. Whether it is drama, comedy or science fiction there is a show out there for each person. One of my favorite shows is called New Girl, starring Zooey Deschanel on FOX. This is a comedy show that involves four roommates living together in a loft. Their lives are all quite different, but the one thing they have in common is living together as a somewhat happy family.

The main character, Jessica Day, is played by Zooey Deschanel, who is a middle school teacher that looks at the bright side in life. She goes by Jess and she is the only girl living in the loft.

Nick, played by Jake Johnson,(in the red shirt) is a law school drop out who is currently managing a bar. He is all about being against society and does the opposite of what is the usual thing to do. For example, he does not engage or own any social media accounts and likes everything on hard copy. He dropped out of law school to work at the bar.

Then there is Schmidt (far left) who does not necessarily engage in Jewish traditions, but he classifies himself as such. He has OCD and is very sarcastic. I have to say that he is the funniest character on the show.

Finally we have Winston who is an ex-basketball player and an interesting character. He does not have a permanent job and struggles with women and with life in general. Basically he is just lost at the moment.

Jess’s best friend doesn’t live in the loft, but she features prominently on the show. Her name is Cece, played by Hannah Simone. She is a beautiful model who has been best friends with Jess since they were in middle school. Basically Cece is the “hot” best friend in this show. Her character adds another girl for the men of the loft to approach in a different way. The guys have this idea that they are allowed to hit on Cece but she barely gives them the time of day. The relationship she has with Jess is a true best friend.

All these characters give diversity to this comedy show.

Although the shows are only 30 minutes long, there is a story line that continues on. Some of the acting is actually improvisation from the cast. The actors have a basic script for each scene and the crew keeps the cameras rolling until they have enough to edit with.

It turns out that Zooey Deschannel is actually very much like her character Jessica Day, which is probably why this role is perfect for her. Deschanel wrote and recorded the theme song for the sitcom. On top of that she is an actual singer and has come out with several albums with her band She and Him.  She has quite the voice. Deschanel is full of talents and will only get even more talented from here. One fun fact is that she would rather listen to herself sing than watching herself act. She must feel more comfortable singing than acting, which is interesting since she is better known as an actress.

New Girl has been around for 3 seasons. You can watch past episodes on Hulu.com. Tune onto Fox tonight at 9/8 pm central to watch the after Super Bowl episode.
