Valencia Patrick is a junior at USF who has high aspirations to make a difference in the lives of women through journalism.
What is your full name? “My name is Valencia Gabrielle Patrick. My mom liked fruit and was into the bible during her pregnancy so she gave me delicious and biblical names.”
Where are you from and where did you grow up? “I was born and raised in Clearwater, Florida. It’s funny when I meet people because they get confused with my accent. I like to give my parents credit for my country accent; they’re from Alabama. My mood determines whether people will hear a southern twang or a monotone voice.”
Why did you choose to study at USF? “I chose this campus because it wasn’t too far from my hometown. At the time I was applying for colleges my mom got really sick and I didn’t want to drive for hours in case something happened. Once I took a tour of the school, I fell in love with the Bull Country. This may sound corny but I’m a true Bull, my zodiac sign proves it. It’s also fun being rivals with my older sister who attended the University of Central Florida.
What is your major? Minor? “I’m in the process of changing my major to mass communications. I’ve loved journalism since I was a staff writer back in high school. I’m going to get my B.A. in magazine production.”
What year are you? “I’m a junior.”
What would you like to do as a career after graduation? “It would be my dream job to write for Essence Magazine. My shelf is full with every issue from the past two years. I can’t wait to graduate and apply for their yearly summer internships. I love any job that empowers women to love and do their best. I want to be one of the voices on Essence’s ‘My Black is Beautiful’ campaign.”
Do you plan to attend graduate school? “Yes, I do see graduate school in the future. I may take a break before I apply. I want to travel and get a bunch of internships to help my career. When I do decide to go to graduate school, I can see myself in New York. I’m still going to major in journalism. My concentration will probably be broadcast journalism. I look up to Soledad O’ Brien.”
What are you passionate about? “I’m passionate about getting my journalism degree. It gives me the opportunity to travel around the world, capture what I see and later turn it into an article or documentary to show others.”
Do you have any hobbies or play any sports? “Yes, I’m a YouTube junkie. I can spend hours online watching beauty gurus and later trying one of their looks or ‘do-it-yourself’ projects. I also enjoy going to the beach, the movies, dancing and traveling.”
Do you have a favorite quote? “‘The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.’ -Sonya Friedman. This is the perfect self-esteem quote in my opinion. It makes you think if I don’t care myself then why would anybody else?”
