Adulting 101: The Basics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

For most of us, college is the first time we are completely on our own. This can be a scary experience. It means you are expected to be an adult 90 percent of the time, and let’s be real, who actually knows how to be an adult?

What is adulting?

How does one adult?

Am I considered an adult?

If those questions have crossed your mind, have no fear Her Campus is here to help you with this foreign process called adulting.

Adulting: is the process of doing adult-like things that your parents use to do when you were in high school (Better known as I am becoming my mother phrase).

Let’s start with the basics.

  • Making your own doctor’s appointments.

  • Going grocery shopping. This means that you are buying real food and not just snacks. Snacks are great, but chips and cookies aren’t a  meal.

  • Cooking. Having food in your fridge is one thing, if you really want to adult you have to cook.

  • Buying and using a planner. Scheduling is your best friend. If you are anything like me you can’t function without having an updated planner.

  • Constantly checking your email. While checking email is boring, not checking your email can cause you to miss important things from work and school. You don’t have to constantly be on your computer, download the Gmail app and connect your USF account.

  • Cleaning. Hopefully by now you are used to cleaning up after yourself, but you aren’t truly adulting until you find cleaning therapeutic.

Becoming an adult is something we have all dreamed of for years, but now that we are moving into adulthood, we are terrified Lucky for you Her Campus is creating a mini series called Adulting 101, where we will be breaking down the art of adulting.

Make sure to check the website next week for an article on grocery shopping.
