Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, I don’t mean Christmas (although, that will always hold a special place in my heart); I mean the emergence of pumpkin spice everywhere. To some, it’s an overly saturated trend catering to the most basic of girls everywhere but for me, it holds a little more significance than a $5 blended Starbucks drink.

Don’t get me wrong, as soon as pumpkin coffee starts to pop up in stores with the assortment of breads, pies and donuts, I’m the first one in line.

If you were to ask me to describe what I thought heaven smells like, I would probably tell you  the inside of Bath and Body Works during fall. The second you step foot into the store, you are greeted with the aroma of apple, cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin – all of which seemingly transport you to those flannel-wearing, hanging by the bonfire with the crisp autumn air nights. Even though we live in Florida, we can still go through the motions of pretending as if we have fall here, right?

Above anything else however, pumpkin is an association to the holiday season and that is  always a time I cherish. Ever since I can remember, my mom has had some sort of pumpkin candle illuminating the house. That scent has always been comforting to me, especially during Thanksgiving. Nothing sounds better than sitting around with your family watching the Macy’s Day Parade while going through Black Friday ads and sipping on pumpkin spice coffee. Even though moments like that don’t happen often, I am constantly reminded of these memories  when I am standing in line waiting for my name to be called and my drink collected. Reflecting on the significance of what pumpkin holds to childhood memories is enough to make a person wish they lived forever in their happy place.

Pumpkin spice lattes may have the place as America’s favorite treat until Christmas, when the peppermint and gingerbread drinks make their come back, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy these autumn months with a good ol’ pumpkin spice coffee. So, the next time you get an eye roll because you want to order a PSL, just tell them it reminds you of home and if that doesn’t work, oh well, it’s delicious.

HCXOXO,

Imani
