Sucking at Succulents

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

For the longest time, I could not keep a plant alive. I had gained this love of flowers and plants from my grandmother, but I could not muster the spirit of her green thumb. People always said that a good plant to start with was a succulent. I was very intrigued and quickly found myself buying an array of shapes and sizes. To my dismay, these also failed. How could I be so bad at gardening that I could kill the easiest plant to maintain?

After killing multiple cactuses, I decided to go speak with a professional gardener and see what I was doing wrong. I so wanted to have my own little windowsill filled with greenery and was determined to figure out how to make it happen. The man I spoke to gave me a sheet that said the easiest way to water the plants once a week. I had been neglecting my poor guys by watering them once a month. I had always thought that these types of plants required the bare minimum amount of love, but you have to be careful with the line between too little and too much.

After learning this helpful tip, gardening has been a breeze. I have a window full of succulents, and an actual garden full of flowering plants. I learned that plants are not as hardy as you might think and require a lot of love and extra attention. I took this lesson and applied it to my life as well. You can’t just expect things to just happen. If you want a job or you want an internship, you have to devote yourself to getting it. Water your dreams a few times a week and pay attention to opportunities that present themselves. I hope that this little bit of gardening advice helped you.
