3 Underrated Beauty Gurus That Need More Attention

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Beauty gurus are makeup fanatics’ best friends and worst enemies. I’ve been convinced  into trying new bronzers, foundations, skincare, you name it by my favorite YouTubers plenty of times with the sweet promise of summer glow and dewy skin. Therefore, I’ve spent a lot of money on things they’ve told me are worth it, which in all honesty might not have been completely worth it. But hey, I also get a lot of enjoyment from learning about new beauty products and incorporating new looks and tricks into my routine. Either way it’s a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.Yet with so many popular beauty gurus all testing the same new trends and products as each other, it’s not difficult for each video to feel repetitive and unoriginal.  Yes, we can still learn a thing or two from the queens and kings of the beauty community — why do you think they have millions of subscribers? Below are a few underrated beauty gurus who definitely need more attention for their fabulousness and their attempts at saving our paychecks!

Matilda

This Australian beauty productive enthusiast is one of my favorite go to YouTubers when I’m in the need of a minimalist look. With 130,219 subscribers, Matilda knows just what products we want to hear about. Weather she’s  testing and sharing her opinions on Korean skin care, or informing us about what’s in our favorite celebrities makeup bags, her videos are quick, informative, and straight to the point. She actually never appears on camera but rather spills her makeup collection for us while giving helpful swatches. If you’re a fan of deep reds, brilliant burgundy’s and pretty pops of orange in your color mood, you will die for Matilda’s lipstick collection.

Dr. Dray

Dr. Dray is a guardian angel sent down to inform us and protect our wallets from over spending on skincare. Dr. Dray is a dermatologist whose passion is, well you guessed it, skincare. Her videos are extremely helpful for those of us who have ever had skin issues, as Dr. Dray tends to cut through the BS and gives harsh facts about what is healthy, and what is just plain useless for our skin. Her popular videos are typically ones where she goes to a pharmacy, or beauty store and looks through skincare products, reads through the ingredients, and advises us what ingredients to gravitate towards, and which ones to run away from.  Dr. Dray genuinely tries to help her 271,199 subscribers save money, as you can rarely see her using expensive products found at Sephora or Ulta. Most of what she uses in her own skincare routine can be found at Wal-Mart or Walgreens so more people are able to afford her recommendations. Some tips you’ll pick up when watching her videos: Less is more, fragrance is evil, and the answer to absolute beauty all together? Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

Penny Tover

I’d watch gorgeous and authentic beauty guru Penny Tover for her comedy alone. This girl is hilarious yet extremely helpful with her product reviews whether she thinks so or not. With 558k subscribers, Penny never tries to come across as perfect, but just tries her best. Which is good enough for me! Hey, I wish more beauty gurus were as honest as she is. Penny is the most unique and original Youtuber I’ve watched when it comes to the content the beauty community comes out with. She tests a lot of hair care products which is extremely helpful as hair usually takes a backseat to make up for most beauty gurus. Her look is more on the minimalist side, as she loves natural beauty, skincare, hair care and so on.  Penny is honest when it comes to her reviews as she’s not afraid to say what products she hates. Yes, there are products that work differently for each of us, but sometimes beauty gurus are paid to love everything that’s sent to them, so there can be doubts about who to trust. But with Penny? I believe everything that comes out of that girls mouth is helpful (as well as comedy gold).

Well, there you have it. There is such magic in the power of makeup but most importantly, it’s about having fun.  And by watching  Matilda, Penny and Dr. Dray, they’ll help make your beauty routine as fun as a trip to Sephora!  Make sure to check out these lovely ladies videos and subscribe to their channels!
