3 Underrated Shows to Watch on Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

I don’t know about you guys but sometimes (always), I need to wind down after a hard week with some good ole TV. Movies, Netflix originals, Hulu, Xfinity, you name it; I watch it. But I’ve been dying lately somewhere between finishing Orange is the New Black too quickly and waiting for the newest season of The Mindy Project (oh my gosh, one week guys!) to come back. So what am I going to watch this week? What are you going to watch this week? Here are three of my favorite underrated things on Netflix to tide us all over until Mindy can soothe us all with her comedic blend of frivolity and wit again.

1. The Triplets of Belleville (2003) a.k.a Les Triplettes des Belleville.

This film is not unknown in many circles but it seems relatively unheard of around here. So if you haven’t seen it, you should. It is a delightfully weird and poetic French animation with hardly any words. That might not sound immediately convincing but it was nominated for two Academy Awards — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Belleville Rendez-vous”. Plus  I must say, I found it personally inspiring.   I would tell you about the storyline, but I think figuring it out is half the fun with this one. Watch it with some hipster snacks like curry flavored popcorn and artsy people that will appreciate it with you.

2. The Bletchley Circle (2013, 2014) a.k.a Kicka$$ women making you feel awesome about being one of their kind.

There’s two seasons of this British miniseries, and I’ll tell you right now that my heart is a little bit broken about the fact that it ends there. It was not renewed for a third season despite being a wonderfully intense and gripping crime/mystery drama. It is set in 1952 to’ 53 and it centers on women who were involved in a secret intelligence group called Bletchley Park during World War II, who eventually gather together again to use their insanely awesome skills to solve crimes. The best parts about this show are a) that it is authentically suspenseful (picture me screaming, “Don’t go in there!”) and b) that it really highlights women and how they weren’t taken seriously at that time and place. Watch this one with a guy so you can squeeze his hand when she DOES go in there.

3. Sabrina (1954) a.k.a The original with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, and if you thought I was talking about The Teenage Witch, get out of here.

Is this one underrated? Well, if fifty percent of you DID think of a certain blonde witch and her black cat, and the other half of you only know Audrey from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I’d say yes. This romantic, black and white film is about the daughter of a chauffeur who is helplessly in love with a member of the rich family that her father works for. It was nominated for several Academy Awards but only won the award for best costume design, which was granted to Edith Head, even though it was rumored that Hubert Givenchy designed Ms. Hepburn’s outfits (draaamaaa!). Either way, it was the beginning of Givenchy and Hepburn’s close relationship and business associations and it will have you craving Couture and a spontaneous find-yourself-trip to France.  And for the record, the 1995 version with Harrison Ford is pretty awesome too, in different ways, but you should start with the first. Watch this one with your girls while drinking something pink out of clear glasses (I know you’re classy ladies).
