Collegiettes it is time to address all the “I cants” that we all say. There is almost no reason why you can’t accomplish something that is important to you. Now of course there are realities you have to face, like no you cannot become Beyonce (no matter how many days you countdown). But for the majority of your own goals you can achieve them! For a long time I didn’t think traveling was an option for me because I was in school, I didn’t make a lot of money, and it wasn’t good timing. I said all these things until I spent over a year in Australia. So, all those “I cants” are not good enough anymore.
Here are the 4 Steps I took to stop letting the “I cants” be part of my life.
STEP 1: Decide what your priorities are, if you decide to really make something a important in your life it’s impossible not to achieve that goal. This means centering future decisions on this goal, and making little sacrifices.
STEP 2: Make a List no one knows why but writing down your goals and the steps to get there helps you achieve that goal. I made over 50 lists with everything from getting a visa to don’t forget to buy groceries.
STEP 3: Ask for help, everyone is scared to fail and to reach out but that is the reason we have friends and family. They want to help you, trust me!!! There is a stigma that failing is a bad thing and although it may not be what you wanted, it makes it that much better when you achieve your goal. It’s ok to get knocked down just be ready to pick yourself back up.
STEP 4: Relax! Let things happen. This was probably the hardest part because once all the hard work is done you just need to wait and let things fall into place. Whether that means waiting for results on an exam, waiting for a visa, or whatever it may be it is out of your hands so accept that.
With midterms coming up and a relaxing Fall Break take the time to decide what is important to you and how you can achieve new or old goals. Good luck collegiates!
