5 Tips to Saving this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

We have teamed up with the Personal Money Management Center this holiday season to help you with your financial woes. We know that December is a month that drains our pockets, from Christmas shopping to elaborate New Year’s Eve plans and then we walk into the New Year with an account balance of $4.23. Let’s make a pact together to start it off 2017 with a little bit more and some habits that will last a lifetime.

Ebates: This is step number one! We know you love to shop because we do too. And since this is the season of giving make sure you are giving a little bit back to yourself every time you shop. Signing up for Ebates will put cash back directly in your pocket. Your first paycheck will be given after you have been signed up for 3 months and have at least $5 saved up. The best part, we have provided a link so that you get a guaranteed $5.

Participate in Secret Santa with Friends: You and your squad all deserve the best gifts this year, but we also know that your squad is broke AF. Don’t put a damper on the holidays with the stress to buy everyone the perfect gift. Instead, opt for a Secret Santa and set a price limit. That way you are only giving one gift.

Don’t sucked into the deals: We know we know that this season is filled with “the best prices” and “one day only deals” but trust us and take a pause. You probably don’t need that sweater and we bet if you let it sit in your shopping cart for a week you won’t buy it. Also, don’t forget that you will be receiving gifts and maybe you’ll unwrap that sweater on Christmas morning. Just remember that even though there is a sale it doesn’t give you a reason to shop.

Selling Stuff You Don’t Want: Get creative here there are so many resources to sell your old clothes, furniture, accessories etc. As far as selling stuff online we recommend using Poshmark (with code HEMIS for a $5 credit) or Mercari (with code HWXEMF for a $2 credit). These sites make it easy to upload photos and sell your used apparel and accessories for a higher price than most consignment shops. Lastly, make sure to go through everything after Christmas and make returns.

IDA Class: This is by far this most important thing you can do this holiday season. The University of Utah hosts IDA classes and gets you signed up for a matched savings program. This is a two-day program December 19th and 20th.  If you save $1500 during your college career the government will match IDA Class you times 3. That means you get a free $4500 grant. This program is exclusive to college students and not nearly enough people take advantage of it. Click here to sign up

I am a current journalism student at the University of Utah. I have spent my years in college studying, traveling, and writing. I am a campus writer for the University of Utah and have my own blog Beautiful Detour. If I am not on campus I am hopefully off in another country meeting new people...or lying in my bed under a million blankets watching that day's netflix binge.
