Best Places to Study at the U That Aren’t the Library

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

I’ve dubbed myself “The Queen of Studying in Places That Aren’t the Library” and I believe I have done so with good reason. It’s not that I don’t like the library, it’s just that sometimes it’s too crowded for me. I personally like to study in quiet, empty places so I can get more done. I feel like the library is too much of a social place and the lack of space was really beginning to bother me. I then took it upon myself to find other, quieter places to study around campus.

Student Union Building – Student Lounge

The Student Lounge is located in the University of Utah Union Building on the main floor by the Union Theater. I came across it by accident one day and I never turned back. It is usually pretty empty and there is a fireplace inside for those cold winter days. I love studying there and it is probably my favorite place to go, even if the Union is kind of out of the way.

Fredrick Albert Sutton Building (FASB)

The FASB building houses the Department of Geology and Geophysics and also doubles as a great place to cram for midterms. It is usually pretty empty and there are tables on both floors that serve as great workspaces. I like to study there in the winter and watch the snow fall through the big windows in the building. This building is also right next to the Two Creek Coffee Shop for when you need a little pick-me-up.

Gardner Commons (GC)

This brand new building across from the Marriott Library is not only super cool, but a fantastic place to study. Each floor has different seating options like tables, booths, and chairs that work for students and their different studying preferences. There is also a cafeteria downstairs that serves incredible food. I personally love the one-sided booths featured in the building.

C. Roland Christensen Center (CRCC)

The CRCC building is conveniently located across from the Spencer J. Fox Business building and features its own little cafe. The building is, again, quiet and modern, with many tables and chairs for people to study in. I like to get a light snack from the cafe and sit in the rolly chairs.

Social and Behavioral Sciences Building (BEH)

Playfully coined the “tower of terror,” the BEH building is one of the first things you’ll see coming onto campus. The outside may be lacking in looks but the inside is another great place to study. Walking into the building, there is a small study lounge with sofas and tables that many students utilize to get their homework done. It is also where a lot of students have their classes so it is a very convenient study place. In fact, I am currently writing this article in the BEH building.

Social Work Building (SW)

Right below the Social and Behavioral Science building, the SW is another option for studying. Located inside is another student lounge with couches and tables, similar to the BEH building with the same quiet atmosphere. It it not as used as the BEH building however, so I find it to be quieter.

I’m sure there are a ton of buildings on campus that are great for studying, but these are where I find are the best places to study for me. If you are one of those people who like studying at home, then I encourage you to continue doing so. However, if you are like me and like studying in places that aren’t as busy then you may find this article useful. Happy studying!
