Billboard’s Woman of the Year has done it again. Her newest single “7 Rings” is trending number one on YouTube with a totally badass girl power vibe similar to what “Thank U Next” delivered just months ago. It’s receiving overwhelming praise from old fans and newbies alike- all still recovering from when Ari dropped a record on a Saturday night because, as she described to Billboard magazine, she âfelt like itâ and her âheart was going to explodeâ if she didnât.
Â
Saving thousands from cardiac arrest, Ariana Grande actually posted a week of promo before releasing “7 Rings”. Sneaking lines or lyrics, pics, and short videos of the music video all week on Twitter, Ari hyped up her fanbase like none other- and for good reason. (Check it out here!)
The reactions to the song have been overwhelming, and the song has been received incredibly well across the board. From fans praising the singer and assigning her Grammys…
…to people writing this single drop into damn history.
A total switch from sweet to sour, Ariana Grande compares “7 Rings” to “Thank U Next” in this tweet: “I guess ‘Thank U, Next’ is more vulnerable and gentle lol. Seven rings is jus like…..a flex. Friendship anthem. How the homies WANT u to feel. What the âthank u nextâ energy evolves into while embracing a new chapter (even tho both moods /energies are v present).”
The song starts with a tune we are all familiar with, “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music. Ari then flaunts her style, friendships, and her self made wealth all in an irresistible bop. However, what most people donât know is that there is a very real story behind the title, and chorus, of the song. In her Woman of the Year Interview with Billboard magazine, the queen reveals it all.
We can all recall Arianaâs short lived engagement to Pete Davidson in August 2018- and the split weeks later in October. Apparently, after returning her engagement ring to Tiffany’s in November, Ari and her gals returned to the store to have a bit of fun. What started with mere retail therapy turned into Grandeâs inspiration for “7 Rings”.
âIt was a… challenging fall day in New York⊠Me and my friends went to Tiffanyâs together, just because we needed some retail therapy,â she explained. âYou know how when youâre waiting at Tiffanyâs they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring. Thatâs why we have these, and thatâs where the song idea came from.â
So thatâs the scoop. Friendship bracelets are out, diamond friendship rings are in. Do ring pops count?? Ariâs emphasis on friendship and treatin yoâself in this song is an emblem that should speak to college students everywhere. With an adorable story like this behind it, I wouldn’t be surprised if this song could rise above our previous fav, “Thank U Next”.
