I am a Sorority Woman was a social media campaign started by the Delta Gamma Fraternity. It strives to break down stereotypes and show the world that sorority women are involved, educated, and deserve to be seen as more than just a “sorority girl.” Throughout the next month, Her Campus at the University of Utah will be participating in this campaign highlighting women from our Row who have done awesome things for our Community!
Ana Hernandez is a Pi Beta Phi, but she is such much more than your typical sorority girl stereotype!
She is an event planner. Ana Hernandez is an Associate Director for the Arts and Special Events Board of Union Programming Council. She helps to plan events for hundreds of people like Oktoberfest, Harry Potter Day, Dr. Seuss Birthday, and Crimson Nights.
She is passionate about service. Â Ana is the Director of Special Olympics Utah where she organizes all the fall games for special needs children.Â
She is a Vice President. Ana serves as the VP Communications for her chapter were she works to build relations with alumni, parents, and other University of Utah organizations and students.Â
She admits that there are some instances where stereotypes of sorority girls are correct, but for the most part, they are false. “We are girls who want to join an organization who will better us and give us a sense of belonging,” something that almost anyone can identify with to some degree. She believes that at the end of the day, sorority girls are just like any other girl except for the fact that they are in a sorority.Â
Ana’s “going Greek” story is similar to a lot of people in that she didn’t originally think she would ever join a chapter because of the stereotype but now is glad she did:
“Going Greek was one of the greatest decisions I have made. I have met some of the greatest people and truly have made lifelong friendships. My sorority has opened so many doors for me and has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and experience new things. I am forever grateful I am part of such a great organization and get to interact with other great organizations through the Greek system.”
The University of Utah is lucky to have Ana on campus AND on the row! Â
