I am a Sorority Woman was a social media campaign started by the Delta Gamma Fraternity. It strives to break down stereotypes and show the world that sorority women are involved, educated and deserve to be seen as more than just a “sorority girl.” Throughout the next month, Her Campus at the University of Utah will be participating in this campaign highlighting women from our Row who have done awesome things for our Community!
Mia Vardakis is an Alpha Phi who takes her passion for empowering women further than participating in a sorority!
She is a teacher. Mia volunteers with Planned Parenthood, specifically their jail program. She teaches Healthy Sexuality at the Utah Women’s Jail, awarding them five days off their stay if they complete all four classes. Â
She is committed. In order to fulfill her volunteer position, Mia has to be knowledgeable in four topics: anatomy, STIs, family planning and body image. She visits the women’s jail twice a week.Â
Mia feels that it is unfortunate that sorority women tend to get the interchangeable party girl stereotype because Greek Life is actually full of unique, smart and empowering women. Organizations on our campus participate in different academic, career volunteer and campus involvement while also encouraging Greek Social events. Â
Mia is an inspiration to so many women on our campus and we are proud to have her as a sorority woman at the University of Utah!
