I am a Sorority Woman was a social media campaign started by the Delta Gamma Fraternity. It strives to break down stereotypes and show the world that sorority women are involved, educated, and deserve to be seen as more than just a “sorority girl.” Throughout the next month, Her Campus at the University of Utah will be participating in this campaign highlighting women from our Row who have done awesome things for our Community!
Spenser Owens is a Delta Gamma and a proud sorority woman!Â
She is a philanthropist:Â She volunteers at Friends for Sight, her sororities main philanthropy, where all of her sisters are required to be vision screened certified.Â
She is a leader:Â Spencer has held three positions in her sorority including VP Membership, VP Programming, and Director of Recruitment.Â
She is involved on campus: She serves on the Student Alumni Board and is an intern for the Dean’s Office within the David Eccles School of Business. She is also Business Scholar which has caused her to travel to many countries; including Peru, France, the United Kingdom. She is also a member of Legal Scholars.Â
She believes there is a stereotype that sorority groups are one-dimensional. From the outside, it can be seen that sororities are simply social groups. However, in her experience (and many other members’), it is so much more than that.Â
“We actively and enthusiastically participate in service. Women encourage each other to study and pursue their goals in school. We support women’s involvement on-campus through a variety of activities. Women are given opportunity to learn from alumni, how to prepare for a career and be successful in finding a great job after college. We give each other support in all projects and endeavors, from movie screenings to Crimson Nights to service projects.Â
While the social aspect is a fun part of being in a sorority, there are so many aspects that are often overlooked. Being a part of Delta Gamma has brought me opportunities that I could not have imagined when I started college.”
