I Found My Home Away From Home In My Sorority

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

As a girl from out of state, coming to a school as large as the U was intimidating.  I knew that the majority of people who came to this school were going to be from Utah, or at least know one other person, where I knew no one.  I decided to go through sorority recruitment in hopes of finding a group of girls I could become as close to as I was to my high school friends.  It was a whirlwind experience, but one I wouldn’t give up for the world.

When I entered my house on bid day, I was overwhelmed with love and acceptance.  I knew I had made the right choice and that this house would become my safe place.  Over the years (I am now a junior) I have grown closer and closer to my sisters.  When I need a shoulder to cry on, or a hug to make me feel safe, I know I can count on my sisters.

I am extremely fortunate to belong to a sorority that has an open door policy.  Every member has the door code and is allowed to sleepover whenever they need to.  As a freshman and sophomore this was a luxury.  Having sleepovers with my pledge class helped us grow closer together than we ever thought imaginable, especially at a time where I missed the comfort of a home as opposed to the dorms.  Living in the house has formed bonds with my other housemates that can never be severed.  These girls are my best friends, my confidants.   If you ever get the chance to live with 22 of your best friends, take it.  It will be the best decision you’ll make thus far in your life.

My big and grand-big are mother figures to me.  If I ever need a ride or a listening ear I know I can count on them.  My twin is my best friend.  My little’s are my babies’; I would do anything for them.  My sorority family is just as committed and loyal as any family member by blood.  I consider myself so fortunate to have these phenomenal women influence and impact my life.

I grew up around all brothers and male cousins. I never knew what it was like to have the encouragement and guidance of females.  I can now say that I have 100 beautiful sisters guiding me and accompanying me on my college journey.  I know that not only are these friendships for four years, but for life.  Living 2,200 miles away from my childhood home is extremely trying at times, but thanks to the home I found within my sorority sisters, I never have to feel alone.

I have a deep love for mermaids, pitbulls, swearing, and all things involving food.  Shania Twain is my spirit animal and I'm a converted Belieber.
