Ideas for Making Your Spring Break Spectacular

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

If you want to do something fun for spring break, raise your hand. If you don’t know how to plan your spring break adventures, keep your hand raised. Have no fear ladies, that’s what I’m here for.

Planning the perfect spring break is crucial because, sadly, spring break only comes around once a year. Getting a whole week off of school during ideal sunshine time leaves you with a lot of free time to flee the country, take a road trip, or explore locally.

First, let’s talk local. Being in Utah is such a blessing. It should be the adventurer’s dream to reside in Salt Lake City, especially if you’re the outdoorsy type. There are endless opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring!

Day trips from Salt Lake City:

Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon

These breath-taking canyons are a 20-minute drive from the University of Utah, making them some of the top destinations for spring break day trips. There are countless hikes to beautiful destinations scattered throughout these canyons that you won’t want to miss out on.

Some of the most popular destinations located in Big Cottonwood Canyon are Donut Falls, Lake Mary, and Silver Lake. It is up to you to spend the day there or to camp overnight. A great camping spot here is the Spruces Campground because several of these hikes and lakes start and end there. Also, the campground offers running water. Running water is a must.

In Little Cottonwood Canyon, Red Pine Lake, and Secret Lake are two destinations that are easy to get to and absolutely worth your time.

Hot Springs

About an hour away from Salt Lake City are the Ogden Hot Springs located in the Ogden canyon. These hot springs are like the Mother Earth’s natural hot tubs. And they are amazing.

Road trips to take in Utah:

Any of the National Parks

HELLO! Utah has some of the most travelled to national parks in the world! Zions National Park, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon, Canyonland National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park are some of the most breath-taking places anyone could travel to and they are right in our backyard. How lucky is that!? Of course, camping is always an option but if you’re not into sleeping on dirt, finding a place to stay in any of these destinations wont be hard due to their popularity. I recommend trying something new and finding an Air B&B to stay in or try Glamping.com.

Each of these places has so much to offer, so whichever one you go to, you can’t lose.

Fremont Indian State Park:

This is such a cool place to visit because of its historical attributes. This area was established to preserve its archaeological sites and it offers a historical museum, hiking trails, hidden creeks, and awesome camping.

If you are thinking “been there, done that” or just want to get out of Utah, road tripping out of state is always a fun option! Luckily, Utah is so conveniently placed right in the middle of so many fun places. Get a group of friends together, pick a destination, and hit the road.

Out of State Road Trips

California

Some of the most popular places in California include San Francisco and Los Angeles but there are an abundance of other places in between to choose from. Pick anywhere along the coast and make it happen…Who doesn’t love the beach?

Nevada

If you want a crazy spring break with crazy stories to tell, Las Vegas is a no-brainer. As we all know, Vegas is pretty much a non-stop party where memories are and are not made (some of which should be kept to yourself). If you aren’t into the party scene, Lake Tahoe is also an incredible option.

Wyoming

Jackson Hole is one of the cutest little towns EVER! There are cute shops, amazing restaurants, and right next door is the Grand Teton National Park!

Arizona

Another popular spring break destination is Lake Havasu. Hundreds of other college students make their way to Havasu to celebrate their week of freedom. It is nearly impossible to not run into people you know and make new friends. Another amazing spot to visit in Arizona is the Grand Canyon. Duh.

If you are the “Go big or go home” type, then maybe going international would be the best option for you! Unfortunately, this is the most expensive option, but have no fear, there are some great deals for college students that are ballin’ on a budget.

International

StudentCity.com has amazing prices on some of the most fun and exciting cruises for college students. There are seven destinations being offered this year so finding somewhere you want to go won’t be an issue.

Volunteering abroad during spring break is like killing two birds with one stone. Being able to travel internationally while also making the world a better place is a perfect fit for you.

Long story short, you could spend your spring break relaxing, catching up on your sleep, and binge watching your favorite TV shows, or you could spend your time doing something that you will remember forever.

So pack your bags and leave your notebooks and pencils at home (unless you tragically have one of those awful teachers who assigns homework during break). Spring break, here we come!
