Spring It On: Unique Ways to Spend Spring Break In-State

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

When we talk of plans in the weeks leading up to spring break, there are only two options we usually consider: option A involves a Hangover-type vacay to Cabo complete with partying, guys, and lots of sun, while option B occurs when you can’t shell out the money needed to make A happen, and tends to involve you laying in your bed watching entire seasons of shows on Netflix and eating your weight in Pringles. What most of us don’t know is that there’s another option on the table, one that’s less expensive than the first option and less depressing than the second. Staying at home doesn’t necessarily mean a week-long hibernation! Utah is one of the most beautiful states in the country, and while that may be my completely biased opinion, these alternative ideas are (almost) scientifically proven to give you a spring break you’ll never forget!

If you like music:

Utah has concerts literally every night, we just tend not to be aware of them. Smith’s Tix is one of the go-to places for concert tickets. I’ll be honest: at the moment I don’t really recognize any of the upcoming performers as any of my favorites but let’s chalk that up to differences in music taste- if you’re into All Get Out or Frankie Paul, check out their website to score some tickets for you and a couple buds. http://smithstix.com/events/music/all

Sugarhouse Coffee has live bands a couple nights each week and this coming weekend they’ll also be featuring some classical Irish music for all those feeling a bit patriotic on the 17th. Their calendar can be found at http://www.sugarhousecoffee.com/#schedule

If you like art:

I didn’t find out about the Salt Lake City Gallery Stroll until a few months ago in an Honors class, but this is seriously an incredible opportunity to see local art. March 15th from 6 to 9 pm you can walk around various galleries downtown, check out their art, and score free food too! The last time I went was in November (I do NOT recommend walking around in the cold for 2 hours) but lucky for you the warmer weather’s coming and it’ll make your experience a lot more enjoyable. http://www.gallerystroll.org/

And if you’ve got a car and a love of road trips (however short), it’s definitely worth your while to drive to Park City and check out some of their events, including their Film Series and Museum. Find out more at http://www.visitparkcity.com/events/ongoing-events/

Obviously, there are a ton of other things you can do during spring break: volunteer at a soup kitchen or local humane society if you feel like giving back, take an impromptu road trip to Moab or St. George, or explore all the quaint shops you pass by downtown but never really get to see up close. Utah’s full of amazing things to do, regardless of your personal interests, so plan a couple events with your friends and see where it takes you!
