What is Panhellenic Council?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

If you are a sorority woman, hopefully, you’ve heard of Panhellenic Council at least once or twice before.  If you haven’t, you’re in good company and this article is perfect for you.  Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the Panhellenic Organizations (generally referred to as ‘sororities’) on your campus.  It is comparable to InterFraternity Council (IFC) or Multicultural Greek Council (MGC).  The Council itself is comprised of the members who serve on the executive council and one delegate from each Panhellenic Chapter.  In order to be considered a Panhellenic Chapter, you have to follow National Panhellenic Guidelines and values. This group is in charge of streamlining communications from each chapter to another, voting on bylaws and evaluating the health and morale of the community.   The executive council sits in on this overarching group and has other duties as the executive council, independent of the delegates.

Overall, they are there to be the liaison between the chapters and the University, to ensure a safe environment, to plan fun events for the member’s of the row, and to coordinate formal recruitment.  Each of those parts though takes a lot more time and have a lot more depth than you might originally think and at most schools, each position probably has a Vice President and chairs with a President overseeing all the activity.  Each position generally has an IFC and MGC counterpart so there is also a lot of collaborating on projects together for the whole Greek community.  Here at the University of Utah, Panhellenic Executive Council is compiled of 8 women.  We have 4 chairs, 3 Vice Presidents, and a President.  Who are those women?  Meet the University of Utah’s Vice Presidents and Panhellenic President of the Panhellenic Executive Council:

Panhellenic President: Madison Keyser

Madison Keyser serves as the Panhellenic President for the University of Utah.  Her main role is to uphold communication between the Dean’s Office, foster unity among all the houses, support the Panhellenic Chapter Presidents on campus and oversee the VPs and Chairs.

Vice President Judicial and Risk Reduction: Julianne Skrivan

Julianne Skrivan serves as the Panhellenic VP of Judicial and Risk Reduction for the University of Utah.  She focuses on how to keep our community safe and limit risk management hazards.  She also ensures that everyone is following the rules, and holds Judicial Board hearings if there is a violation.

Vice President Recruitment: Kristi Behrens

Kristi Behrens serves as the Panhellenic VP of Recruitment.  Her main responsibility is ensuring that Fall Formal Recruitment goes off without a hitch.  This involves preparing the marketing materials, lots of tabling, planning out each day to every detail and training the Recruitment Counselors with the help of her Recruitment Counselor Coordinator.

Vice President Event Programming: Rachel Heard

Rachel Heard serves as the Panhellenic VP of Event Programming.  She plans relatively one event per week ranging from Panhellenic sisterhoods to Greek Week to educational workshops and dinners and can reach over 1000 students.  She works closely with members and the University to ensure that her events are fun and safe.

These four women work super hard to make your community awesome and the overall Panhellenic Council continues securing your place at your University.  It’s vital to know that they are more than just the people getting your chapter in trouble but they are there to serve you!
