The ability to be undeclared is one of the greatest things about being a freshman or sophomore. It gives you the opportunity to explore different career paths and interests and if you don’t like where you’re going or what you’re learning you can just start over and try something new! The beauty of being undeclared is that no strings are attached; it’s like the friends-with-benefits but scholastic form. Whenever collegiette’s are undeclared explain they are undeclared, a judgmental look typically follows. These are only a few reasons why being undeclared is okay!
Â
1. You need more than one interest.Â
Â
This might sound like the most generic statement ever but there are A LOT of people out there that don’t realize what they are studying isn’t conversation worthy. For some reason, once people narrow down on what they think they could do for the rest of their life that is all they want to talk about. Being undeclared means that you are able to take different classes and expand your interests as well as discovering a major.Â
Â
2. A major doesn’t necessarily mean a career.Â
Â
Meaning that it probably won’t impact your entire future, just a significant portion of it. Most of the time, graduates don’t even get hired in the same field as their major. Maybe it is really as useless as they say?Â
Â
Â
3. It might be impossible for you to pick just one.
Â
Especially without “shopping around” choosing a major is like picking one pair of shoes to wear for the rest of your life. Completely unrealistic. Why not have two? You have to look around a little bit, try some different styles on, and eventually come up with a few options that work with your style and it’s totally okay, sometimes even preferred.Â
Â
So collegiettes, next time one of your parents friends ask about your major don’t be afraid to tell them just how undecided you are, because it is NOT necessarily a bad thing and I guarantee there are thousands of other students that would agree.
