Have you ever thought about possibly getting a job on campus just for some extra cash? Maybe you thought about it but you aren’t sure what having a job on campus quite entails. Luckily for you, I have an on-campus job and could tell you about my experiences working here at UC.Â
Â
I work at the mailroom here on campus and if I am being honest it is a fun job to have on campus. I was looking at a few when I was a freshman, but the mailroom is what really stood out from the rest. Having a job on campus, however, isn’t just as easy as it might sound it does require you to treat it as a real-life job outside of campus.Â
Â
I work Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm in the mailroom and you might be thinking “what about your classes Kelly?”, but most of my classes this semester are online and asynchronous which makes it easier for me to work now more than ever. When you start working on campus your freshman year you are more than likely not going to get hours like these though. When I started working in the mailroom my freshman year I only got four hours a week to work making 10$ an hour. Getting only four hours my first semester working here really turned me away and discouraged me from actually wanting to work there. However, you have to think about how many other people are working there and how long they have been working there as well. The longer you work for your job on campus the more hours you are likely to get because you are more experienced and know more about the job.Â
Â
When it comes to your work hours you have to also always take into consideration your school workload and class schedule. You have to make sure you send your boss/supervisor your schedule because they cannot have you scheduled to work when you have class and you can not lie to them either. Also, take into account your homework which I know from experience takes a lot of time off many majors. If you have a lot of work and you know you need a lot of time to complete it, let your boss know so they don’t over-schedule you either.Â
Â
Overall, working on campus is fun and a good way to get to know other people who are in your community. One thing I can say is working in the mailroom has brought me to learn so many people’s names on campus and overall just know some people on a friendly level. You never know what could happen when you branch out a little. Look into on-campus jobs who know you might love it.Â
