Are You Sure of Your Future?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

Do you know what you want to do in the future, or are you still trying to find an area that you might fit into? Have you had the same aspiration since you were five, or did you just come up with something yesterday? Everyone has a different path for their future, and wherever you currently are on your path is okay.

It’s okay not to know what you want to do in the future. It’s okay to change your major a couple of times. It’s okay to explore your options and take a variety of classes. College is a time to find what you like best, so you can do it for the years to come. Once we’re out of school, we have to work for many years. We need to find careers we enjoy and want to do. Find out what you’re passionate about, and focus your career around that. That is the only way you’ll be happy with what you’re doing in life.

For me, it took a while to narrow down my options. It’s overwhelming to think about all the possibilities. There’s thousands of different jobs and career paths and hundreds of major and minor combinations. It can be hard to choose just one to hone in on. It took me longer because I was interested in several majors, and I was afraid of choosing the wrong major. Take your time when choosing your major, but start thinking about it as soon as possible. You don’t want to rush into a major that you don’t really care about. You also don’t want to be three years into a major just to completely change your mind, because then you’ll have to start all over.

It’s okay to be wherever you’re at right now. Don’t let other people push you into something you don’t want to do. It will only cause you distress and discontentment. Don’t let others talk you out of something that you want to do. When you remove your passions from your studies, it lessens your desire to learn. I would encourage you to study something that you’re passionate about. This is your future; own it. Ultimately, this decision is yours. Don’t let others influence your decision because they’re not the ones living your life. Choose what is best for you!

Romans 5:8  I attend the University of Tennessee at Martin as a Psychology major. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my friends, reading books, and taking naps.
I am a pre-vet major who loves to laugh (especially at myself), drink coffee, and spend time with my dog, Cora. I moved from Massachusetts to Tennessee to attend college at UTM and compete for their division 1 rifle team.
