“Anything for Selenas”
âIn a world full of Yolandas, be a Selenaâ
CRIME with CARMEN:
âCon tanto amor (con tanto amor) Se marchitĂłâ, Â who remembers this masterpiece? I sing my lungs out to this song. âThe Queen of Tejano musicâ.
Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. She only knew how to speak English but sang her songs in Spanish because her dad wanted for her to get in touch with her culture. Selena was a music artist, songwriter, fashion designer, and among other things. She was selling concerts, records, She was the bomb.com in the 90âs. The ‘It’ girl to many. She stays being one the best selling female artists till this day.
She opened a Boutique here in San Antonio, of which Yolanda Saldivar was the manager. Fun (sad) fact; Saldivar was born here in San Antonio, (we donât claim her though). Yolanda Saldivar was a nurse who would attend Selena’s concerts prior to becoming the president of her fan club. They became real close friends, so Selena thought, till she was caught embezzling money from both of the organizations which were her boutiques and her fan club. Plus the jealously towards Selena was insane. Selena found out these heinous acts by her father, Abraham Quintanilla, so as every person would, she went to confront her, not knowing that would cost her own life.
They met at a Days Inn Motel in Corpus Christi, where Selena demanded the financial papers, and that is where Saldivar pulled out a revolver and pointed it at her. Selena tried to flee but was hit in the right lower shoulder. She was then taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital, while Saldivar tried escaping in her pick- up truck and proceeded to stay there more than 9 hours!! At 1:05 pm, Selena, âThe Queen of Tejano musicâ, was declared deceased.
Whoever saw the movie, ‘Selenaâ the scene where her family is in the hospital receiving the news, we all cried like a baby. That was a sad day for The Latinx Culture, we lost a great artist, lost a queen but we stay with her legacy.Â
