On Saturday, October 29th, San Antonio officially welcomed the inaugural Mala Luna Music Festival!
With two days of performances from artists like Steve Aoki, Kaskade, G-Eazy, Kehlani, and Travis Scott, the outdoor festival was a great time and even sold out!
Mala Luna had the three things all festivals must have: music, art, and food! Centro San Antonio provided the festival with live art installations while multiple vendors offered a plentiful supply of food and merchandise.
Another worth mentioning detail about Mala Luna is that a portion of the ticket proceeds were donated to a non-profit organization called Network for Young Artists.
Can we add that one of our own members got a selfie with Steve Aoki?! Then got the chance to sit down and chat with Lil Yachty, Trill Sammy and Dice Soho, as well as half of Rae Sremmurd in the Red Bull Tour Bus. AND she was even able to sit in and watch Travis Scott’s interview!
Since Mala Luna was based in San Antonio, we know that the UTSA presence at Mala Luna was strong. And yes, we take major pride in the UTSA flag that was waved around in the crowd. When Travis Scott – a former UTSA student – took the orange UTSA flag from a fan and waved it around, the crowd full of Roadrunners went crazy. He then reminded us of his days as a Roadrunner when he mentioned The Outpost and Aspen Heights. It was so inspiring to see someone who was previously in our shoes living their dreams now.
It might not have been Voodoo Fest, but the excitement at Mala Luna was incredible and I believed G-Eazy when he said (not once, but twice) that we were the best crowd he’s ever played for. Even though the mosh pits were insane and I almost died from being at the front of the crowd, it was definitely worth it.
I get those goose bumps every time I think about this festival. It really is hard to believe it was Mala Luna’s first year. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this festival with the years to come. Mala Luna 2017, wya?
