Shonda Rhimes’s newest hit TV show Bridgerton premiered on December 25, 2020. Needless to say, a lot has happened since then so I’ll forgive you for forgetting the Bridgerton siblings’ names, but with season 2 having premiered this past Friday, here’s everything you need to know.
Last season, we were introduced to the Bridgerton family. We have Anthony (30), Benedict (28), Colin (23), Daphne (22), Eloise (18), Francesca (17), Gregory (13), and Hyacinth (11). Each book of the Bridgerton series focuses on the love-life of a different sibling, season one being Daphne’s story.
Simon and Daphne:
The 1813 social season starts off with all of the elegible young women of London being presented to the Queen in the hopes of being named her “Diamond of the First Water”. Of course, Daphne was flawless in her presentation and becomes the both the Diamond and the most sought after woman of the season. Daphne dreams of finding her “love match” in the world of arranged marriages, but as the rest of the season can attest, that does not come easily. Anthony, the protective older brother he is, scares away all of Daphne’s suitors for not being up to his standards.
Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, arrives in town just in time for the start of the season, and despite his protests, he participates in the season at the request of his godmother, Lady Danbury. Simon believes that due to his father’s failings in parenthood, he will be a terrible father as well, and therefore wishes to end his line with him. However, due to mutual need, he agrees to pose as Daphne’s suitor once it appears her only suitor left standing is (the some-what creepy) Lord Berbrooke.
Simon and Daphne’s fake courtship becomes far more difficult to fake, and Anthony catches the two kissing in the garden. Anthony forces Simon to marry his sister, to protect her image, but Simon, now with feelings for Daphne, does not believe he will able to give her what she needs in giving her children.
Daphne and Simon eventually do marry, and Simon get’s over his hope to not have any children, and the two live happily every after (even though Simon does not appear in season 2).
In terms of the other siblings and friends:
The Bridgerton’s neighbors, the Featheringtons, host a distant cousin for the season. Marina Thompson, however, has a growing secret. She is pregnant and trying to find a husband as quickly as possible to keep her indiscretion hidden. She is still in love with her soldier-boyfriend, but believes him dead. In the end, she decides to settle with Colin Bridgerton until her lover’s brother comes and proposes. Happy ever after?
Oh! Lady Whistledown. The Gossip Girl of her time, keeps the entire town updated on the ins-and-outs of the season. And her identity? None other than Eloise’s best friend, Penelope Featherington.
Of course, there is much more, but this is what you really need to know for season 2.
