How to Ask if Guns in Your Community Are Safely Stored

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Guess who’s back and better than ever?? IT’S US! And this time, we’ve got a surprise up our sleeves…. a collab with HC Harvard! Audrey Thorne from the HCHarvard chapter has written two articles for us about gun safety and ASK Day! What’s ASK Day? Basically, ASK Day is a movement to start talking about gun safety with the people in your community. Ask your family, friends, neighbors, and anyone you feel comfortable if they have guns and how they store them! Read her other article here to learn more, and keep reading!

***********************************************************

1. Figure out who to ask

Ask your relatives Ask your host parents Ask your roommate Ask the family you babysit for Ask your Airbnb host Ask your friends Ask the party host Ask your date

2. Start with other questions

3. Then ask the three-part question – Do you have a gun? Is it secured? Is it stored separate from the ammunition?

4. Share some stats

Bonus tips:

Acknowledge the awkward

Don’t be confrontational

Try asking through clubs at school
