Dear UVA students,
Meet your new best friend: www.freefoodfinder.com/uva. If you are running low on plus dollards, meal swipes, or groceries, this site is for you. Campus rep Elizabeth Spear (’16) has made it her ultimate goal to ensure that every single event she comes across from flyers or Facebook events that offers free food is listed on this calendar. As finals approach and the willpower to cook and maintain a healthy diet goes down the drain, FreeFoodFinder will be there to help make sure you study on a full stomach.
This online food-finding platform re-launched on January 12th, 2015 by Genevieve Nielsen and Jon Eberhardt, both graduates of Davidson College. They hoped to not only provide a site where students could go and see all the diverse events (that offered free food!) going on, but also for organizations to market and PR their own events. Here at UVA, the site continues to serve that purpose. It’s crowd-sourced, so if you are the PR chair or an officer in your CIO, you can easily make an account and add your own event to the calendar. The calendar is organized by day to allow you to scroll in chronological order from earliest to furthest dates. Since it launched at UVa, it’s become the most proliferated site out of all the Virginia schools, and gets 700 hits per week and rising.
I most highly recommend you take a look and give it a shot. Whether you’re a hungry and/or broke student like me, or part of an organization that wants to have a greater PR reach, FreeFoodFinder can help you. Just don’t be that one kid who comes for the food and leavesm because that’s super rude and no one likes you. Come learn about all the wonderful CIO’s we have on ground and become a more informed member of the UVA community. You never know, you might meet your future bae at that one event giving away free Mellow Mushroom, seriously.
