Though we are all struggling to repair our grades before the end of the semester, everybody needs a break from the overbearing UVA workload once in a while. If you have time to spare, head to the movie theater and watch Arrival, director Denis Villeneuve’s newest masterpiece.
This sci-fi film begins when 12 UFOs mysteriously land in various locations on earth. Instead of immediately fighting the unknown, the characters try to understand their purpose and discover something new about the universe. Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, is a linguistics professor responsible for communicating with the new creatures, assisted by scientist Ian Donnelly, played by Jeremy Renner. Throughout the film, the characters struggle to work with other countries to figure out a plan for dealing with the aliens. This science fiction movie causes you to think more than you ever thought you would during a movie; it will keep you on the edge of your seat. Arrival is both mind-boggling and entertaining. It’s smart and creative premise is supported by amazing special effects and witty dialogue to capture the attention of audiences throughout.
With a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics support the audience’s reaction. I never thought that a movie could give me chills until I saw Arrival. I was speechless when it ended.
I highly recommend this movie to any sci-fi or mystery aficionado. If you liked the physics and space aspect of Interstellar and the ambiguity and drama of Inception, you’ll love this movie.
It is rated PG-13 and is currently playing at the Violet Crown in Charlottesville. Take a break, grab some friends, and go see this movie!
