Spend Winter in the Cuddle Cave: Movies Collegiettes Should Snuggle Up With This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

The song may say it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but I’m not going to beat around the bush – going out in the winter sucks. The walks from apartments to bars to frat houses never seem longer and girls’ going out clothes, never more impractical. So, if one day you decide not to risk frostbite, wind chill, and your Northface being locked forever in a frat brothers’ room, cuddle up with one of these movies and have a cheerful, toasty night in.

1.  When Harry Met Sally
Hands-down my favorite romantic comedy. You can see this movie a thousand times and it still wouldn’t be enough of Meg Ryan’s adorable ordering habits and Billy Crystal’s pronunciation of “Pecan pie.” And the scene at lunch is so much better than The Ugly Truth’s imitation – you’ll know what I’m talking about when you watch it.

2. Clueless
“Rollin’ with the homies…” The best way to bring back nostalgia for the ‘90s…especially those tanks they called cell-phones. And you can even feel smart watching it because it’s based on the classic Jane Austen novel, Emma.

3.  The Philadelphia Story (or anything else with Carey Grant in it)
A beautiful, wealthy socialite is about to get married when, (surprise!), in pops her extremely attractive ex-husband and a handsome young news reporter. Both of them are in love with her, of course. Tell me this doesn’t scream chick flick. I know black and white movies may not always be the most action-packed but trust me – the dialogue can’t be beat. These were back in the days when Hollywood trusted that its audience was smart enough to keep up with intelligent, witty banter. Without a doubt, a must-see rom-com.

4.  Breakfast at Tiffany’s
How can I have a movie with Katherine Hepburn and not include Audrey? And how did Audrey Hepburn get to be so perfect?  No girl can go her life without seeing the diamond-covered socialite, determined to own her own life, actually fall in love.

5. Gone with the Wind
Sorry, I can’t make a movie list without including Gone with the Wind. Maybe it’s because I’ve always secretly wanted to be Scarlett O’Hara. Or I’m obsessed with Clark Gable. Either way, through the years, Gone with the Wind has been critically acclaimed as one of the greatest movies of all time. Don’t let the age or length deter you – the glamorized world of southern belles, real gentleman, and rocky romances will lure you in for the full four hours. See if you aren’t wishing for your own personal Rhett Butler by the end.

6. The Princess and The Frog
Disney made the right choice getting back to its 2D animation. There’s something magical about it. And since this came a little after our time, not many people have seen it, which is sad because Prince Naveen of Maldonia is the sexiest and most hilarious Disney prince by far. The Princess and the Frog is also one of the only Disney movies on Netflix play instantly so it’s easy to get.

7. Pride and Prejudice
This can be the Keira Knightly or the BBC version – whichever you have time for! And what girl doesn’t want to watch rich British people getting married? Well, maybe I’m biased. I did stay up all night to watch Will and Kate tie the knot. But even if you didn’t, the chemistry between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy is enough to make any girl wish she lived in the eighteenth century.

Who needs to go outside? With these movies, hot chocolate, popcorn, and your best friends, you can set yourself up in front of the TV until spring.
