SPOT-“lighT”-ED The 24th Annual Virginia Film Festival

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

In case you need another reason why UVa is the best school in the world, I’ve got 3 words for you: Virginia Film Festival.

The Virginia Film Festival, which is hosted by UVa each fall has been going on since 1988,  and has included notable guest stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Matthew Broderick, Sandra Bullock, Morgan Freeman, and more. Presented by UVa’s very own College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the film festival is a four-day event, that kicked off this past Thursday November 3rd, and ran through Sunday, November 6th.

The Opening Night Gala on Thursday was followed by the much awaited film The Descendants, starring George Clooney (sexy!), which is already getting Oscar buzz. Fun fact: Last year’s opening film was The Black Swan if that’s any indication how high quality these films are.

Over the course of the weekend 84 films were screened at various locations including Culbreth Theatre, Vinegar Hill Theatre, The Paramount Theatre, Regal 4 and Regal 3 Cinemas on the Downtown Mall, and UVa’s NAU Auditorium.

Special highlights worth mentioning of the festival include the Adrenaline Film Project. This unique event filmmaking competition involves anywhere from 10-12 teams of filmakers writing/casting/shooting/editing/screening their original films during the festival during a 72 hour period. The screening of the films and awards was at the Culbreth Theatre on Saturday night.

So I hope you grabbed some friends and kicked off the weekend right by enriching your life with some high quality film.   If you didn’t, don’t fret, you can start planning now for next year! Lights, camera, ACTION!
