The University of Virginia boasts hundreds of clubs and organizations. While the club fair in August is undoubtedly overwhelming, and it can seem like time management during the semester is too much to handle, extracurricular activities can lead to internships and jobs. Katrina Margolis (CLAS ’15), an English major, began writing for Her Campus in high school and continued writing for Her Campus while at UVA, and now serves as Assistant Editor at The Tab.
“I’m from Boston, and Her Campus was founded by two Harvard grads in the Boston area. They began a section that was basically high schoolers helping out other high schoolers with the college application process. I wrote about applying to colleges, college interviews, that sort of thing. Then when I came to UVA, I joined as a writer, and then became co-editor the end of my second year,” Margolis recalls.
As co-editor of Her Campus at UVA for two years, Margolis says she “learned a lot about leadership, about what people will respond to, and what they won’t. I also learned how to handle some tough situations, such as letting someone down who applied for a leadership position. It’s hard to navigate those sorts of things, but you learn to find your footing.” She also credits her experience with Her Campus as reaffirming her time-management skills.
Advice Margolis has for people interested in joining Her Campus at UVA is “[to take] the time to write a really well constructed, well informed article will pay off later on. Having a platform to publish as a student is a valuable thing that most don’t get the chance to take advantage of, so make the most of it. With most organizations, the more you put into them, the more you get back, and Her Campus is no exception.”
