Your Daily Tech Addictions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

You. Yes, you there, scrolling through yet another webpage at top-notch speed. You know you do it. And the first step to stopping your addiction is to accept that you have a problem. Now say it with me, “My name is ___________ and I am a 21st century technology addict. “  Not all technology addicts are created equal, we all have our own personal favorites when it comes down to what we can’t let go of.

Whether you have an iPhone, Droid, or any other phone with Internet access, they all have one thing in common- your fingertips are constantly glued to the brightly illuminated touch screen. The appeal of these phones comes largely from how easily you can browse, Tweet, blog, shop, text, and take pictures anywhere and everywhere. Oh, and of course, you can make calls, but that’s an almost primitive function.

Making statuses is the easiest way to communicate what you’re feeling on social media, but sometimes these statuses can become overkill. While one or two inspirational quotes are fine and even welcomed, no one wants to see all these pieces of advice with no fortune cookies included. Updating what you’re doing every few minutes unless something very, very dramatic is happening (read: if Starbucks decides to start delivery) is unacceptable as well.

Almost everyone has a blog now whether it’s about food or about their life or how they wish their life was going or whatever it is that they’re passionate about. Blogs can be incredibly addicting, not only to read, but for the blog writers as well.  Some people have taken blogs even further and started doing vlogs- what better way to show literally the whole world what exciting things happened to you today?

Speaking of blogs, we can’t forget YouTube and other video-sharing websites. Every time we get together with your friends, we’re all anxious to pick the next video to show everyone. We subscribe, rate, and comment with an unmatchable eagerness. Just try not to get into any battles on the comments page under an adorable cat video.

When your food arrives after a long wait at a restaurant or café, before you reach for your spoon, you often reach for the nearest camera (usually on your Smart phone). Posting food pictures to social media not only make the rest of us hungry, but also makes your page resemble a cooking website.

Our addiction to social media definitely won’t be going away anytime soon, and nor do we want it to. As new websites are created everyday, the trends are sure to change but we’ll always have something new to explore and be entertained by.Â
