Beauty Closet: How to Preserve your Leather Boots Through the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

We all came to Vermont for different reasons. Whether you’re a ski or snowboard enthusiast or prefer to get out on the lake in the summer, suffice it to say, none of us came for the piles of brown slush on the sidewalks. You’re rushing to your ten AM class and of course the one day that you decide to grab the Frye’s your doting mother got you for Christmas the sidewalks are amiss with snow. Then you go through a couple of thoughts…”Wait what? It didn’t even snow last night!” “Am I really about to ruin my boots for fifty minutes of this Survey of American Poetry class?!” But wait, don’t panic! The proper preventative measures can save you from the horrible slush and also keep you looking wonderful in your non-winter boots.

1.)  Spray your boots with a waterproofing product.

This will increase the life of your boots exponentially! Most manufacturers will suggest a certain brand but if you can’t find a specific one, just go into any shoe store that sells boots and they will have an array of options. Also, spray them down throughout the winter, not just one time.

2.) Clean salt stains immediately.

OK. So some salt got on them, but that’s inevitable. No one will judge you for wiping them off in the bathroom, because chances are they’re going to do the same. Take a warm damp cloth and gently wipe them clean, this will keep them from leaving lasting stains.

3.) Keep your boots polished and clean.

Use a regular polisher every so often to clean off small marks or scuffs. This will not only keep them looking tiptop, but help them last longer.
