One thing I’ve learned about being in college is my weeks are a seemingly endless cycle of school, Netflix, and sleep. Recently, I have been wondering where my passion is. As a kid, I loved reading, writing, and drawing but when you’re forced to do those things to get an A it can feel like drudgery. When I have free time, I usually watch TV or go on social media. Needless to say, my creativity is severely lacking. If you are feeling the same way, I have some tips to boost your creativity while being in college.Â
First, the easiest way to promote creativity is to digest meaningful content. After a long day it is hard to pick up a hobby let alone get off the couch so, instead of scrolling through TikTok, I recommend watching video essays on a new subject or something that interests you. I personally enjoy videos that dissect movie scenes. This small habit change will allow you to explore new topics without the pressure of maintaining a GPA; not to mention, doing this has greatly improved my attention span. YouTube is also great for tutorials. You can watch a video on how to draw a self portrait or make creme brulee; even if you think you’d be horrendous at something, it’s worth a try, trust me.Â
You know those spurts of energy you get in the evening? Use them to your advantage! These moments can be an opportunity to journal for 10-20 minutes. I like to Google creative writing prompts and let my mind run wild. There is something cathartic about utilizing pent up energy from sitting in class all day. Likewise, it is also beneficial to slow your mind down with a book of your choosing. You can read whatever you want, whether that be a Her Campus article or Fifty Shades of Grey. Reading and journaling are fantastic options to not only relax but also allow your brain to employ its more creative side. Still have energy to spare? Yoga or any type of workout is awesome for clearing your head which ultimately promotes creativity. Â
The purpose of these activities is to slow your brain down and use your energy for something that is productive but not laborious. Creativity isn’t about being an artist, it’s about expressing yourself through whatever outlet you choose from baking cookies to journaling about your day. Don’t limit yourself and your mind because you think you “can’t” do something, the beauty of being creative is it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to make you happy. School is exhaustive and repetitive enough so do something for just you, especially during the upcoming finals week.Â
