Simply Sorority: The Ins and Outs of Formal Recruitment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

With formal recruitment at the end of week, I went around and asked sorority sisters for insight into their own recruitment experiences. Here’s what they had to say (all sisters remained anonymous):

“It’s casual, fun, and a great chance to meet some amazing women who are going through recruitment or who have already found a chapter to call home! Definitely a lot less intimidating than most people think”.

“Recruitment is like flirting with girls. It seems weird to be trying to get other women to like you and ask you back to their chapter, but I found the most effective way to make connections with women was by being myself. I always go for the laugh and try to be silly whenever possible, which worked well for me at recruitment. I was laughing away and having a great time. The stress melts away when you are making long lasting connections!  These women are looking for potential sisters, so show them your fun side! If they can see you sitting on their couch being a total goof ball, then you are on your way to joining a fantastic chapter!”

“Be yourself! Don’t try and act like a certain stereotype you think the sorority wants and don’t try too hard, it will be obvious. Don’t be afraid to separate from your friends when going through recruitment- some of my best friends are in other chapters”.

“Intimidating at first, but so worth it in the end after you get comfortable with the sorority you choose. Be yourself and the right sorority will pop out at you. Transitioning into a group of girls who already know each other is very scary, but before you can even blink you’ll be on the other side recruiting girls. You’ll be spending many hours together and singing until you have no voices left!”

Here are a few tips to help ease those recruitment jitters!

  1. There are so many women going through formal recruitment, so you want to make sure you stand out! Make these sisters remember you by bringing up something about yourself in the conversation that you think they could connect with. For example, I remember I was talking to someone and they mentioned traveling, so I rolled with it and we ended up spending 15 minutes talking about our travel adventures!

  2. Just like in a job interview, first impressions are important. Make sure you dress appropriately, keep it classy ladies!

  3. I truly believe in the whole “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be” thing, so just go in and be yourself.
