With the semester coming to an end (hard to believe, right?) the time has come for us to select a new Campus Correspondent to take over for myself and Tianna. At Her Campus, the Campus Correspondent acts as the editor-in-chief of the chapter. The duties of the CC for UW-Lax include assigning articles, recruiting writers, holding meetings, running the Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages, running holiday giveaways, editing all articles, and also writing articles as needed. The job involves writing and leadership skills as well as serving as the ultimate problem-solver. Because Tianna and I are both graduating in May, we are so thankful to have such a dedicated and talented writer on our team to take over for us in the fall…meet Kasey Overgaard!
Hometown: St. Peter, MN
Class standing: Junior
Major/minor: Marketing & English: Writing/Rhetoric emphasis
Projected graduation date: Spring 2016
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I don’t know about 10 years. I don’t even know about 5 years, but hopefully I’m happy and enjoying doing what I’m doing. I want to say that I will still be writing, and I’m sure I will be in some way, but dreams/goals change and life changes all the time. I’m just going to take whatever good opportunities life throws at me and hope for the best. So, I just hope to be happy. I am planning on a 3-month trip to Europe the summer after I graduate, though. So, that I can tell you for certain. I’m going with my sister and we are going to travel as much of it as we can. Very excited about that! It will be a challenge for sure, but a great experience. Like everyone, we both dreamed about traveling the world but as everyone knows it’s easier said than done. We figured we should both take time to do as much of it as we can before we officially start our lives.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I don’t have very much of that, ha! When I do I usually like to just be lazy and watch movies with my friends. Mostly I liked to organize. That sounds really lame, I know, but I love to make lists and organize everything from my room to my schedules. It’s mostly just regrouping for the next go-round of homework and chaos and whatnot. My planner is my baby and prized possession. I can’t go anywhere without it. On the more exciting side of things I love to just be in the sun (I’m totally in summer mode right now) playing volleyball or softball with anyone who’s willing, or just lying out and listening to music. I like to relax in my free time.
Aside from HC, what other writing experience do you have?
Well, I’m an English major and I’ve taken a lot of writing and grammar classes such as Report and Copy Editing and Modern English Grammars. Especially in my Report and Copy Editing class we had many article assignments where we went out and interviewed community members and wrote news stories. But besides the obvious, I have been writing every week for the HC UW-Lax chapter since January and I have also been writing every week for the Racquet, the student newspaper, as a Features Reporter since beginning of my sophomore year.
How did you get involved with HC?
It’s kind of an ironic story actually. I, also, had been trying to get writers to start up a Her Campus chapter at UW-L last fall, but Tianna beat me to it! The ironic part is I ended up being assigned to write about it for the Racquet! I ended up interviewing Emily, Co-Campus Correspondent, and got a chance to talk to her, express to her my interest in it and get involved. So I became a contributing writer. Now, I am ecstatic to become next years CC; Tianna and Emily will be tough acts to follow, and I have big shoes to fill, but I’m up for the challenge!
What is your favorite thing about writing for HC?
I love writing for HC. My favorite part about it is being able to write about what interests me and what matters to our readers. I love being able to give them not only want to hear, but what they need to hear as well. There are a lot of important issues out there that need to be talked about and brought to light. I love that I am able to express that through HC. I want HC to be a place of empowerment for our UW-L women.
What goals or fresh ideas do you want to bring to the table next semester as the new Campus Correspondent?
Again, I want HC to be a place where women and girls can feel empowered. I want to bring more of that to HC, while still keeping the fun, Buzzfeed-type content! The HC UW-Lax team had talked about trying to get HC an organization on campus to get our name out there and be able to do things on campus we aren’t able to do otherwise. So, that is one of my goals as well. I am also hoping to grow our chapter here, get more writers, and be able to produce more content every week. I hope to bring my marketing major skills to the table and really raise awareness, so as a HC team we can reach more collegiettes.
