Over the last week or so, you may have heard the story of 9 year old Jacob Thompson. At the age of 5 years old, Jacob was diagnosed with Stage 4 high risk Neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer where only half of the children diagnosed with this lives past the age of 5 according to the American Cancer Association. Recently, his condition has gotten worse and has spread over numerous parts of his body. He was admitted into Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland on October 11, where doctors told his parents it was likely the “last time” and that he wouldn’t make it until Christmas.Â
Despite being sick over the last few years, Jacob loves the holidays, specifically Christmas, according to his parents. Since he is bedridden in the hospital and won’t likely make it until Christmas, his parents decided to bring Christmas to him this year. They’re expecting a visit from Santa soon and have decorated his hospital room to resemble a Winter Wonderland. In addition to all the Christmas spirit in his hospital room, Jacob had one more request to fulfill his holiday cheer and anyone can help.
Jacob has made a request to anyone around the world who may have heard his story and is willing to help him feel better. Jacob’s wish is simple: he wants anyone to send him Christmas cards to help him celebrate Christmas early. Jacob’s mom stated that he prefers handmade ones and one with penguins on them, since it’s his favorite animal, but any card is greatly appreciated. According to his parents, Jacob has already received hundreds over a couple days, even receiving some from celebrities.Â
