Like many college freshmen, I came in undecided on my major, with no real idea what I wanted to study or do for the rest of my life. In high school I was convinced that I was meant to be a teacher. I quickly realized that I am not patient enough to do that every day. I decided on probably 4 or 5 different majors before I ended up on Marketing. I thought Public Health, International Business, Healthcare Administration, and Pre-PA. It ultimately came down to what I thought I would enjoy, what I am good at, and what I was somewhat familiar with. I grew up with two parents in the business world and always thought that would be a good place for me to end up. If you feel like you have no idea what you should be studying, there are so many resources out there to help you figure your s*** out! There are online surveys, books like “What Color is Your Parachute?”, and tons of campus resources. Do not panic!
Your college major does not determine your career for the next 50 years. I guarantee you that many of the people in your life that have graduated from college are currently in a field not related to their college major. Your college major should not limit your creativity or your passions. You can find a side hustle or a hobby that lets you get your creative juices flowing or lets you give back to your community.
If you find yourself struggling to decide what you want to study for 4 years, try not to get overwhelmed. It can be tough being the only one in your friend group who doesn’t have a set plan for what classes you’ll be taking, but try taking this time to take new classes, figure out which classes you enjoy, and why you enjoy them. Talk to your professors, they want to help you! Do not freak out. You have plenty of time! This process can feel stressful and impossible, but I promise you that you can be happy in whatever field you end up in.
